Thurles Shopping Centre sells €17 million winning lotto ticket!

Eason in Thurles Shopping Centre may well be the luckiest shop in Ireland after selling last night’s mega €17 million EuroMillions jackpot ticket – just eight months after selling a €7.5 million Lotto winner!

The National Lottery confirmed today that the winning EuroMillions Quick Pick ticket was sold in Eason’s Thurles – and that contact has been made from a syndicate following the mega win.

News broke earlier this morning that the winners were part of a 32 person syndicate from Stakelums Home and Hardware Thurles. A spokesperson from the syndicate is believed to have made contact with lotto officials this morning.

Owner of Eason in Thurles, Tom O’Toole, said: “We are in shock! We can’t quite believe that we have sold two massive jackpot winning tickets in quick succession. We are only recovering after selling a €7.5 million Lotto jackpot-winning ticket last October. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine we would be selling a €17 million EuroMillions ticket so soon after.”

“We have had a lot of people buying lottery tickets since our win in October. And we also saw an increase in Scratch Card sales of around 20%. After this, we may be known as the luckiest shop in Ireland. It is fantastic for Thurles and we wish the winners all the best of luck with this massive win,” he added.

Stakelums Home and Hardware store employs 70 people in total, while the syndicate is understood to be made up of both former and current staff.

Speaking about the win this morning, Joe Stakelum told the Tipperary Star that the syndicate has been running in the store for more than 20 years, adding that one of the winners only joined the syndicate within the last six months.

However while staff were indeed delighted to have won, Mr Stakelum told the Tipp Star that celebrations were “tempered” following the news that a syndicate member’s father had passed away on Tuesday evening.

“Everyone is very happy to have won but out of respect to our colleague celebrations are being tempered. Some of our staff found out this morning as they came into work they had won and we also have staff out on holidays so we are in the process of contacting them as well,” he said.

“It’s super news for the town because there are 32 families going to benefit. Some of the syndicate have been members for over 40 years, some are ex-staff who remained in the lotto and some lads are in their 20s so it will benefit a hole cross section of the town,” he said.

Thurles has had several other big National Lottery wins in recent months including a syndicate who collected a cheque for a whopping €250,000 after winning the Lotto Plus 2 top prize on a ticket sold at the Centra Store in Stadavoher, Thurles. In March a scratch card paying out €500,000 was sold at Sheedy’s Centra Store while McKevitts Costcutters Store on Friars Street, Thurles, sold a €500,000 Lotto Plus 1 winning ticket last December. Also in December 2017 there were also two separate scratch card wins of €250,000 and €100,000 bought in shops in Thurles.

A National Lottery spokesperson confirmed that contact has been made from a syndicate in relation to the big EuroMillions win this morning. “We are in the process of verifying the ticket and we hope to do that today. Until then we cannot confirm the win. But there is massive excitement and we are thrilled that Ireland has had its first EuroMillions jackpot win of 2018.”

Thurles Shopping Centre sells winning Lotto Ticket!

A Co Tipperary shop was buzzing with excitement on Thursday as customers and staff guessed who could be more than €7 million richer after the latest National Lottery draw.

Wednesday night’s winning ticket was sold in Eason in Thurles Shopping Centre. The ticket, which the National Lottery confirmed was a “quickpick”, is worth €7,545,870. There was just one winner of the jackpot.

“It wasn’t me, that’s for sure,” said Fiona Murphy, after she checked her ticket. “Pity, cause I have it spent already in my head. There’d be no stopping me – €7 million of it would be gone before the weekend!”

The winning numbers were 8, 10, 11, 25, 28, 32 – with the bonus number 35.

“Hopefully, it was someone local,” said Deirdre O’Toole, manager of the family-owned shop. “But we’ve no idea. Everyone is so excited. One of our staff was a few minutes late to work this morning – by the time she got here we had decided she was the new millionaire.

“We might never know who won the prize if they don’t come forward. But this is a small town, the rumourmill has already gone into overdrive. The lottery give great advice to whoever wins it and what they should do next.”

Mary Grace, National Lottery regional sales rep, said “congratulations to whoever won, and the first thing they should do is sign the back of the ticket – as well as anyone else who owns a share of the prize. Put it in a safe place, and then contact the claims department.”

Back on the shop floor, every regular customer that walked into the shop was being asked if they were suddenly a multi-millionaire. Most jokingly claimed they were. “I wish,” said Frank Hayes. “Would I be here if I was? I’d be in the Airport already heading for the Bahamas. Fair play to whoever won. I hope it changes their life for the better. It surely will.”

There was also one winner of the Lotto Plus 2 draw, with someone “in the North” holding a ticket worth €250,000.
